Elk Agriculture Conflict Hunt

The Yukon Government (YG), Department of Environment will be issuing permits in response to elk/agriculture conflicts in the Takhini River Valley. It is anticipated that directed hunting will influence elk behavior and they will begin to avoid these areas.

YG wants to ensure that TKC citizens have the opportunity to participate. Interested TKC citizens will be added to a call up list of interested elk hunters that are capable of hunting within 24 hours and can complete the hunt within 7 days.

If you are interested in participating, please provide your contact information (name and phone number) to Lands, Resources and Heritage (LRH) as soon as possible to ensure that you are on the call out list. LRH will assist all interested citizens in obtaining a Yukon hunting license which is free to First Nations.

YG Conservation Officer Services Branch will contact the willing hunter and issue a permit. Hunters will be directed to the conflict zone through Yukon Environment.

The hunter will be required to complete mandatory reporting, as well as, remove all remains to ensure other wildlife are not attracted to the area.

For further information and assistance, please contact

Public Hearing: Community Lands Bill 2014-1

In order for Ta’an Kwäch’än Council government to pass a Bill which becomes law, the Bill must pass three readings by Council, as well as being reviewed and approved by the Elders Council. This process allows the option for Ta’an Kwäch’än Council government to hold public hearings for its citizens on the proposed Bill.

The proposed Ta’an Kwäch’än Community Lands Bill 2014-1 (Bill) was given first reading by the TKC Council on February 17, 2014. The Bill must go through two more readings and the review and approval of the Elders Council before it becomes law for Ta’an Kwäch’än Council.

The TKC Council appointed a special committee of citizens from the Traditional Families. On July 22, 2014, the Special Committee was mandated to conduct an assessment of the Community Lands Bill 2014-1 and to solicit Ta’an Kwäch’än Council citizens’ views by way of public hearings and additional public consultations as required in order to produce a report of their findings and recommendations for the Council by January 31, 2015.

There have been two Public Hearings to date: November 25 and December 9, 2014. However, the committee was not able to review the entire Bill in the time available.

It is very important for you to participate in this public hearing.
