Aboriginal Shield Program – Urgent!

TKC has been asked to provide up to 3 Facilitators for the Aboriginal Shield Program. This is a culturally sensitive substance abuse prevention program targeted specifically at Canadian Aboriginal youth through the RCMP. It is an eleven module program, initially delivered to students in grades 5 & 6. In Yukon, the first roll-out of this program will be at Elijah Smith Elementary School, starting later this winter.

The TKC Facilitators will work in conjunction with 3 facilitators from Kwanlin Dun First Nation. The initial time commitment of a Facilitator is for 2 days of training in Whitehorse in the early part of February. This will be followed by delivery of the 11 modules before end of May, with an hour budgeted for each module. An Honorarium will be provided for this role.

Naloxone Treatment Information Session

TKC is holding an important information session facilitated by the Yukon Government Opioid Overdose Coordinator.

The session will show:

• How to identify the symptoms of overdose
• Where to access Naloxone treatment
• How to administer the Naloxone treatment

February 5th at 4:30 pm in the TKC Boardroom at 117 Industrial Road in Whitehorse. This is open to anyone who is interested.

LRH Gathering Agenda

The Lands, Resources and Heritage department will be hosting a Community Gathering and invites all TKC citizens participate. January 25th and 26th. The main three objectives are to share LRH successes regarding past and ongoing department initiatives; seek citizen input to improve service delivery and identify needs to develop new projects for the upcoming year; and maintain and grow relationships between citizens and the staff that serve them. There will be a mix of presentations, interactive “workshops”, a Trade Show, and panel discussions. Transportation will be available for those who need a ride. Canada-Modern Treaty and Self-governing First Nations Forum

January 8, 2019

Along with other Yukon First Nation Chiefs and Modern Treaty First Nations and Self Government Indigenous groups, Chief Kane met with Prime Minister, the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau and several federal ministers at the Canada-Modern Treaty and Self-governing First Nations Forum in Ottawa on January 8th, 2019. Topics covered in the meeting included progress achieved and next steps, collaborative fiscal policy, proposed implementation policy, negotiations loans repayment, a proposed Modern Treaties oversight body, following a distinctions-based approach, and advancing new policies.

 

YAPC Voices Influencing Change

The Yukon Anti-Poverty Coalition (YAPC) is hosting a 5-week training program on how to use your voice to create change in the community.  Voices Influencing Change is a program for people with lived experience of homelessness, poverty and other forms of social exclusion. Individuals who are interested in sharing their own experiences of poverty, homelessness, or exclusion to make a difference for others, are welcome to apply for this program.

The training will take place in downtown Whitehorse and will run February 5 to March 7, 2019 on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 9:30 – 12:30 pm followed by lunch. Training focuses on story work, public speaking, leadership skills, advocacy opportunities, and how to be heard in the community.   Through YAPC and Voices Influencing Change, participants are given opportunities to bring awareness to lived experience issues and to work towards ending poverty and homelessness in the Yukon.

TKC PD DAY January 18th

TCK will be hosting a PD Day Camp (click on link for details and directions) on January 18, 2019. The Day Camp will be hosted in the Mundessa Office building on 509 B Jarvis Street. I have added 2 photos to help guide parents to the drop off location, and a sandwich board will direct parents on the 6th street back lane opening. It is the large silver building that backs onto the back lane.

 

Southern Tutchone Tribal Council Community Consultations

Southern Tutchone Tribal Council invites all Southern Tutchone people to join us for community consultations.  Your thoughts, ideas and input are important and required to help us develop the STTC 3-year Strategic Plan. We will have two sessions each day, in each community. The TKC Community Consultations will take place January 22nd in the TKC Boardroom at 117 Industrial Road in Whitehorse. First session from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm, the second session from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm!  Join us and help shape the work of the STTC for next 3 years!

Lands, Resources and Heritage Community Gathering

The Lands, Resources and Heritage Department will be hosting a Community Gathering on January 25th and 26th.  All TKC citizens are invited to participate. The Community Gathering will be facilitated by LRH and will take place at the Mount McIntyre Recreation Center in the Grey Mountain Room!

There will be a Trade Show and Meet and Greet with LRH staff and one-on-one discussions to learn more about our projects, and a community dinner!
