THE CHIEF AND DEPUTY-CHIEF

Pursuant to section 9 of the Constitution of the Ta’an Kwäch’än Council, Ta’an Kwäch’än Citizens elect a Chief and Deputy-Chief every three years.

Amanda Leas was elected as Chief on October 18, 2021. Christina Peters was elected as Deputy Chief on January 20, 2022.  The position became vacant following Deputy Chief Peter’s resignation on June 7, 2022. The responsibilities of the Chief and Deputy-Chief are set out in sections 9.5 and 9.6 of the Constitution and in the statutes of the Ta’an Kwäch’än Council.

Council Members

Pursuant to section 8 of the Constitution of the Ta’an Kwäch’än Council, the Council is the lawmaking branch of the Government of the Ta’an Kwäch’än Council. The Council is composed of the Chief, Deputy-Chief and nine Family Directors who may either be appointed or elected by five traditional Ta’an Kwäch’än families. The official way of the operations and business of the Council is prescribed in the Rules of Procedure for Council.

In accordance with sections 8.4, 8.10 and 8.14 of Constitution of the Ta’an Kwäch’än Council, a Council Member must be a citizen of a traditional Ta’an Kwäch’än family, must be at least nineteen years of age, must reside within the traditional territory or surrounding area of the Ta’an Kwäch’än Council, and must not have a criminal record of an indictable offence or the offence of theft, fraud, or false pretences.
