Proposed Lands and Resources Act 

The introduction of this legislation is important for the Ta'an Kwäch'än Council and Ta'an Kwäch'än citizens alike. The proposed Lands and Resources Act received first reading in August 2007 but, in February 2009, returned to the Board for further review and passed first reading again on 16 February 2010.
The proposed legislation applies to all settlement lands, including any resources thereon or therein, retained by the Ta'an Kwäch'än Council under its Final Agreement.
The proposed legislation recognizes the fundamental importance of
  • protecting and enhancing the cultural identity, traditional values and lifestyle; and
  • balancing the protection of natural resources and the socio-economic interests of citizens making
    use of settlement lands
The purpose of the proposed legislation is to ensure
  • the responsible management of and sustainable development on settlement land; and
  • that settlement land shall be held in trust by the Ta'an Kwäch'än Council for the use and benefit
    of present and future generations of citizens
